Rubella infection during pregnancy is a serious disease, with the developing fetus at increased risk for a condition called congenital rubella, which can include deafness, heart problems, cataracts of the eyes, and mental retardation. ACOG reports that the fetus has a 50% chance of being affected if the infection is acquired during the first month of pregnancy but only a 10% chance if the mother is affected in the third month. After vaccination, ACOG recommends avoiding pregnancy for 1 month. If pregnancy occurs before vaccination or in a woman without immunity, the vaccine should be administered immediately postpartum before leaving the hospital.
