? Charles Te Nani Vercoe told the man later accused of his manslaughter he would die to protect his family. At an inquest into the death of the 79-year-old Te Teko kaumatua before Whakatane coroner Ian Bentley yesterday, Mr Vercoe's daughter Lorraine Hale wept openly as the evidence was read. Police later charged Mr Tarei with Mr Vercoe's manslaughter. A Rotorua High Court jury last August found Mr Tarei not guilty of manslaughter. An autopsy report confirmed Mr Vercoe died as a result of a blood clot between the brain and its covering and facial injuries consistent with a blow to the head. In her evidence, Mrs Hale said she could not understand how a man could assault her sister and her father and still be a free man.
